help with mini infusers

hey everyone! I have a ? about mini infusers. Well I had one a few weeks ago in clinicals and I had a IVPB and a primary going. I connected the IVBP to the port above the pump and the mini infuser to the port closest to the patient. I moved the IVPB higher and put in the rate/ml and pressed run IVPB. Then I turned on the mini infuser. It was right bc my instructor didn't say otherwise I was just making sure that the IVBP and a mini infuser could be runned at the same time?? I didn't know this prior and also another ? when the mini infuser and IVBP are finished does it automatically switch over to the primary? If there was no primary going would the pump just turn off or what? Thanks!!

First of all....if you are going to hang a secondary (into a port above the level of your volumetric pump)..IT MUST be compatable with the primary. Then if you also added another medication to infuse at the same time to an infusion port below the pump that was not directly at the T /ext or Y site of the IV catheter...THEN ALL the things you are giving are mixing and must be compatable with each other. Did you check on that ? Were you infusing all at the same time...clarify for me what your medications were and I can tell you if you set it up properly.
