Help I dont know how to do this

For any of you who have a record I really need your help. How hard was it for you to get a job. I do have a criminal background from when I was a teenager. Nothing violent just wrote some bad checks. I dont know what to say on my interviews. I dont want to check yes on an application because I honestly feel they wont give me the chance to explain, so I leave it blank. I have an interview tomorrow and I really want the job and really want to be honest but I dont know how to explain it. So if anyone can help me I'd appreciate it.

One of my coworkers told me she was arrested for smoking pot when she was younger. She checked YES, and brought a personal letter to accompany her application. Good luck.
