Okay, so my class will be presenting our case studies next week. My clinical instructor asked that we be creative with our presentations because she doesn't want to hear three hours of reading from notecards.
My patient is 90 years old and her admitting diagnosis was Respiratory failure. She also suffered from CVA, Chronic Renal disease, Anemia, decubitus ulcer, ischemic Ulcers. I'm thinking to myself....How on earth can this be creative?
I was thinking that maybe I could discuss the reflective portion. For example, my patient's son had her on a FULL CODE!!! The patient wasn't doing well, she was on Contact Precautions, She had a feeding tube, she was contracted due to the CVA's, she suffered from serious skin breakdown and ulcers, she was non-verbal, she kept her eyes closed all day and she always cried.
The other nurses mentioned that this patient had come from the nursing home and her eligibility for medicaid was pending. So until that gets straightened out, she will be at the hospital. She had been there for 2months already. The nurses stated that the woman just wanted to go peacefully and that she was really suffering, but that her son said that she is not going to be a DNR and that they are to do everything to keep her alive. Basically, a part of me would like to introduce the topic of Advanced Directives. I'm no psychic, but no one would want to live this way. She was not living. She was in pain and she cried. No sounds. Just tears flowing and not a sound. I want to do a good job on the presentation and I don't see any "creative" about this. I don't want to make light of this. I'm about ready to just do a power point presentation!!
Anyone have any good ideas? Again, I don't want to or plan to make light of this, but I also don't want to bore my instructor out of her mind. Someone said that one semester someone dressed up like a kidney and someone else baked a cake that was in the shape of lungs. I don't think I'm going that route. Please Help!!
Any suggestions would be helpful, as I can probably do a number of things!
Thanks in advance! :-)
