I am a nursing student given her first case study! Our teacher told us she doesn't expect much since we do not have the knowledge base yet, but I am researching it anyway. A 16 year old delivers baby at home in bedroom. Parents find her and bring her in ER. Baby is premature and in resp. distress and mother has uncontrolled breathing, Mother blames boyfriend who denies any responsibility to the baby.
I have to describe a phase of interview process, nursig actions, factors that would influence type and amount of data collected and develop a plan of care.
I have an idea as far as the bleeding, the baby is resp distress and calming down possibly separating the mother if all else fails but I'm not sure. Thank you!!!

this is a link to a form to be used by nursing students from indiana university school of nursing. it will help guide you in developing the kind of information you would need for a new mother and newborn in developing a care plan. the problem you are going to have is that you are not dealing with a real patient. you are also going to want to look for some information on any specific problems experienced in an unassisted home delivery. i would think from the description of the scenario that a social services consult is definitely in order here! your instructor is going to want to see that you follow the nursing process, so you very likely will want to organize the information you will turn in to your instructor based on the nursing process steps: gathering information, developing a nursing diagnosis, setting goals and outcomes, nursing interventions, evaluation. also, make sure that you incorporate maslow or whatever theory of a person's needs your program wants you to utilitize into developing nursing care as well. so, your interview process will be part of the assessment. factors that would influence type and amount of data collected will be related to the cooperativeness of the patient and her boyfriend, their educational level, their level of intelligence and ability to understand and articulate the answers to questions. that is also part of the data collection. the nursing actions come last because you need all that other information first. got it? now, go do it. one of the items, though not the most important one, on your plan of care for the mother is going to be knowledge deficit.
