I am interested and found an NP program at the same university I graduated from. The school has an Adult NP course. My question is if after going through the adult program can I practice as a Family NP or do I need special certification for that? Also how did everyone finance their graduate education? I already have 20,000 in student loans from undergrad, will they allow you to take additional loans? I currently work in HH and have private duty cases, some which are very easy and I think I will be able to work full-time and go to school maybe part-time. I am also wondering if I have enough experience. I am going on 2 years of experience some in OB, most in community nursing such as school nurse and HH. I seem to enjoy my autonomy in HH and mainly why I stay. I tried surgical floor, did not like at all, the 12hour nights were exhausting. I especially had a problem with how afraid nurses were with calling or paging an MD with issues, even if it was 6 in am. Anyway, I am truly interested in NP program, has always been my dream. I am a little worried about finances, paying for school and being able to pay my mortgage at same time. Thanks for any responses.

hello, rn123456789,
no, you would not be able to do family practice. only adults. so, if you are interested in treating peds/newborns, etc., you need to seek the fnp track.
as for experience? many many debate that here. i suggest the rn have at least 5 years experience in varying acute care areas, but that is imho only.
check out this thread regarding np with no desire for rn?
some np grads are seeking employment in rural clinics. one benefit is to have their loans repaid.
good luck.
