I'd first like to congratulate those accepted as well as those placed on the alternate list for GTCC's Fall 2010 Nursing Program. :yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah:

To those on the alternate list, remain hopeful! I was an an alternate for the Fall 2009 program and was later accepted.

Seeing as how our orientation isn't until June 18th, perhaps we could try to get to know each other a little better here...

I'll start...

I'm 27, single, no children. I work full time as a NA. I'm a second degree student. Received my first degree from ECU back in 2005. I've been trying to get into nursing school since the end of 2006. Took pre req's at WSSU and was not accepted into the Accelerated BSN program. Later applied to GTCC and was accepted into the ADN program Fall 2009. I screwed up along the way and was basically kicked out of the program due to failing my pharmacology final. So this is my second time around. Thank God for second chances!!! I'm actually glad I've gone through what I have b.c it makes me appreciate it more. I now know what I can and can't do while in nursing school...Basically devote more time to studying and less to trying to have a "life"

Hi MotivatedOne. Your username is definetly true! Kudos to you for sticking to your goal and overcoming those hurdles. I was accepted to Forsyth Tech's fall 2010 ADN program. I'm 24, single, with no kids. I hope that helps me focus on the program..haha. Good luck next semester :)

Thanks!!! Congratulations to you as well. I hear FTCC's program is tough. Like you have to at least an 80 to pass. I think not having any children is somewhat of an advantage but I know plenty of people with children doing extremely well in the program. I guess it depends on how determined you are and how well you manage your time. It definitely helps if you have someone to help you. Seeing as how I'm single and well honestly, the majority of my family is struggling right now, it's just me. So I'd still have to work full time to pay my bills.

I read some of your other posts. I noticed you are doing a skills check off. This is the first year that NA certification is a requirement for GTCC's program. So I'm not sure if we'll have to check off on skills before starting clinicals. I hope not, I get a bit nervous performing infront of others. Last fall we started clinicals the first week of class but it was more of an orientation to the facility and paperwork.

Anyway, good luck to you and the rest of your classmates and again...CONGRATULATIONS!!! I don't think anyone other than those applying knows what we go through to get into nursing school...especially the people I've told I was accepted.

I'm sorry you have to work full-time while in school. Is it at least a job where you can study somewhat?

As for the CNA check off.. you're gonna have to get over that whole performing in front of others and being nervous thing. We all have a touch of that.. you just have to let it go. I think it's important that we go in with the knowledge of a CNA. Do you not have your certification? They have a class at FTCC that is a "brush up" for CNA skills.. you could look into that? Youtube videos of CNA skills being performed. I'm going to be studying my @#$ off this summer so that I can be ahead as much as possible when the time comes.... :nurse:

And Congratulations to you too :) You're right..only nursing students understand. Best of luck to you..I'm sure you'll do great!!! :yeah:

I've been working as a NA for 2.5 years now. I'm employed by one of the hospitals you'll be doing your clinicals at this semester. I could study depending on how smoothly the night goes. It's not that I'm not confident in what I do, it's just that last fall when I was in the nursing program, I had a tough clinical instructor who was on top of things. I appreciated her for that but she made me extremely nervous.

Yeah. I had a very aggressive clinical instructor for CNA..and she almost made me hate nursing. Instructors really can make or break your learning experience. I think some of them are wayyy too hard.

Hi MotivatedOne,

You have been very helpful on this website! I will be starting in the Fall as well. I have a bachelor's degree and a paralegal degree. I am going from working in the law field to not woring at all and nursing school! I started as a nursing major, but made a bad decision and switched majors. I have a 2 year old son. I have always done well academically, but having my son really does make me try harder, and in a weird way, taking my pre-reqs was easier with him then when I was 18. I think having a routine and learning time management are key.

I am nervous about performing in front of others as well. Looks like that's what I'm going to be spending my summer practicing! I got my CNA back in 2001 (this was the last nursing class I could get into without having to retake the CNA class) when I was in highschool, so I REALLY need to brush up on those skills! God help me!!..and Congratulations! I wish you lots of luck and many many good grades :)
