Grants for nursing school?

My suggestion: If there is a hospital in the area, maybe you could contract with them to work for them x-amount of time in exchange for helping you pay for school. Another option, if there is an unemployment agency in your state (MI has MichiganWorks!), sometimes they will offer scholarships and grants to people who are going to school for programs that are considered in-demand. Finally, there's no better resource than your financial aid office at school. Make sure you ask them about private scholarships for returning students, and nursing students that might not have been tapped into yet. Oh, one more thing. When I approached my nursing department for entry into the program, I was $5,000 short for tuition. I had a meeting with the dean of the department and she said that, while this is incredibly uncommon, she would give me the money from the department's budget because she saw my desire. So, I suppose my suggestion is, talk to anyone and everyone you can think of. Money for this sort of thing can be found in the craziest places. Heck, even your employer might have a grant or something for employees who are going to school.

I just wanted to say I am doing BOCES LPN starting this wednesday and my course costs $10,000 I am wondering why such a difference in price I only got an $800 pell grant. I am looking into VESID to see if they can help me out due to the seizure disorder. Good luck. Tracy

There are price differences with the various BOCES everywhere. I've heard of them as low as $5500 and high as $10,000. In New York City, the Board of Education offers it for free. (If you're willing to travel into Manhattan and Brooklyn every day.)

I personally know at the Long Island BOCES that I am attending it is them who restricts alot of loans/grants. We can't apply for TAPS or anything. Just Pell Grant and certain boces approved loans. It is unfortunate, they almost want to make you shy away from the program if you don't have enough money. Wether it be $6K or $10K it is alot for people to come up with out of pocket. I hope you find some help where you live....

Yes...that's why I'm going to check out the financial aid situation for the SUNY community colleges and for you, maybe you want to check out the LPN programs that don't require any money at all...some in NYC are free and if I lived in LI I'd consider it.

I'm sure you know this, but if you go to a community college you could sit for the LPN boards halfway into the RN program. Would be cheaper that way.
