GPA question

It depends on the program, but many will look at both. Often they will weigh the pre-req GPA more heavily since they are the courses most relevant to the nursing program. Also, they will often look at how you've done in the most recent courses, so if the AA is from a few years ago and the pre-reqs are more recent, they will probably weigh those more heavily. Thanks for the reply! The lower grades were 10 years ago, so I've definitely come a long way since then... My advisor says I'm competitive for the program I'm trying for but when talking to some of my fellow pre-nursing students, I start worrying. I guess it's just a wait and see kind of thing.

i have an aa in business from years ago so i've taken tons of classes that have absolutely nothing to do with required courses for bsn. my total gpa including those business courses is somewhere between 3.3 and 3.4. however just looking at the nursing pre-reqs and all science courses that i've finished, i have a 4.0. is that taken into consideration for bsn program admission or is it the total accumulative gpa that counts most?

i also wonder the same thing b/c i have a 4.0 in my nursing pre-reqs and a 3.8 overall. btw i too have a degree in business like you

anyways, my little booklet called "new admissions process to nursing/dental hygiene/radiography" says:

"......will be considered using a point system based on the number of general education/support coursework completed according to the following: 60 percent of the points awarded will be based on the amount of health program general education and support coursework completed. 40 percent of the points awarded will be based on the health proggram gpa (grades earned from general education and support courses applicable to the designated health program)".

The program I want counts all grades (whether program requirements or not). I knew that ahead of time. I was just curious if program reqs and science classes are weighed more heavily into the equation or not. I understand every school is different but I figured there may be a trend one way or the other. Regardless, I understand my best bet is to contact the school in question itself :) Thanks again for the input!!!

My school looks only at GPA when processing applications, and it's your cumulative GPA. You must report every grade received from every college attended. They do not put more weight on prereqs than anything else. But, my old school looked at a lot more than just GPA and for your GPA they only looked at prereqs. Just ask them what they do, or go to an info session if they offer them.
