Gonna get stuck?

Hey y'all. My name is Marah and I just graduated from an Associate's Degree program in May with my RN. I have passed the boards and accepted a job with a home hospice company as a case manager. I am worried that this job will prevent me from being able to later get a job in the ED (my passion) or even in a hospital setting. However, not many places are willing to hire new grads in my area without an internship (which filled quickly). Anyone have some advice on how to prevent becoming just a hospice nurse?

You are just starting out and you aren't locked into anything.

All you have to do is keep your eyes and ears open. Do your job passionately, but keep searching for positions that are more closely related to your future goals. As you get RN experience, you will be more marketable. You might not go straight to the ED, but you can get an acute care staff nurse position and transition in that way. Along the way you can take classes or attend seminars that keep your acute care skills fresh and maybe gain you some certifications along the way. As you collaborate with other facilities, network and build relationships.

The only thing that locks you into a position is not searching for another job.

Jw what company? I wanna do case management. I don't think bedside is for me.

Congratulations on your position as a hospice nurse! That is a challenging job requiring a lot of skill. I worked as a hospice aide and applied (and was turned down) for a lot of hospice nurse positions.

If I was in your shoes I would look for an every other weekend job on a nursing home TCU. This may keep you more marketable for later acute care med surg jobs.

Good luck!

Who knows, you may fall in love with your new position and not want to leave. . .just a thought.
