Going to ENTRY LEVEL DNP but leaving after getting RN or MSN?

Published

Hey Yall,

I just wanted your thoughts. There are a few programs in my hometown that offer an entry level DNP or entry level MSN. I don't really want to spend the time doing that, I would rather just have the RN and leave. Nevermind the ethics of it (or do, I'm not sure), but is it possible to go to a entry level DNP program and leave after I got the RN?

Thanks in advance.

Generally when programs award a degree along track to another degree this is considered an exit point. And once a degree is awarded it’s not taken away. So yes if you stop after the bsn or msn is awarded it’s yours to keep and you are eligible to test and practice at the level to which you have been educated. Rn and if the msn prepares you for an aprn role then you can test at that level.

The only thing to keep in mind - this requires a reputable program submitting at appropriate paperwork that allows you to sit the exams.

You'll have to look closely at the structure and rules of the particular program. Some programs will award lower degrees along the way to final degree (e.g. MSN or DNP). You might be awarded a BSN at some point, maybe an MSN, or not. Other programs to do not award those lesser degrees. The only degree they award is the one at the end ... when you have completed the entire program.

So ... check into each specific program that interests you to see their options.
