Hi ya'll! I'm trying to go back to school for nursing and had a few questions for anyone who knows the answers:) I'm looking into Dalton State College, Georgia Highlands, North Georgia College and State University, and Athens Tech and wasn't sure if there was anyone here who had attended any of those programs and knew about the admissions process. By the time I would start one of those programs I will already have my BS in Criminal Justice (so I already have a bunch of applicable college credit) and I'm not sure about how Associate's Degree programs work. Do you apply to the school itself and the nursing school at the same time? What kind of courses are prerequisites? Also, realistically what kind of GPA does it take to get in at any of those schools? (I'm graduating with my BS with a 3.8) Any help would be greatly appreciated!:)

Hey Katie,
First of all you have to start your prerequisites. Every nursing program posts what the required prereqs are. Most of the time, you need to finish all of those before you can start a nursing program. They are usually Engl 101 and 102, Math 111, A&P 1 and 2, Chemistry, and Microbiology. Start the classes that you haven't taken in your BS program. If you take the prereqs at the same school that you're applying to nursing program for, you're in good shape. Otherwise, you need to apply to the school for the same semester that you're applying for the nursing program. Once you've been accepted to the school, you can fill out a nursing application. Make sure and write down when the applications are due to each of the schools you're applying for. It can be as early as December, if your applying for a fall start the next year. Hope this helps, and good luck.
Thank you so much for your help! This spring is my last semester before I get my BS and I'm taking A&P I (I have a free elective left). Hopefully I'll take A&P II and Microbio in the summer as a non-degree seeking student at the college where I'm getting my degree and then I should be able to apply to some ADN programs and *hopefully* get in. Thanks again!

You may also want to consider an accelerated program, since you will have your degree.
