Gainesville, Florida

U.S.A. Florida

I was wondering if any of you happen to be in this area. My husband has informed me that he really wants to apply to the University of Florida for their Doctor of Plant Medicine program. I currently live in Illinois and have never even seen Florida! I am an LPN with 18 years experience. The last 10 have been working with infants on vents as a private duty night shift nurse. Also have worked for a Durable Medical Equipment company (mostly CPAP and Bi-PAP mask fitting and help with finding patients the ostomy product that works best for them). I'm wondering what the job market is like in this area -- and well, any info will help! Even the name of the newspaper(s) so i can attempt to look some of this stuff up for myself.

Thanks in advance.

I live in proximity to Gainesville (Shands). I must say they saved my nephew's life (bone marrow for leukemia) but as a part of a research group for Parkinson's (through NIH), I was not treated well....felt like a rat - a lab rat!.

A co-worker went to Shands as a traveler (they knew she was NOT experienced before they hired her for a specialty area with promise to train)-- they let her go after 3 days!

Florida in general is a lower paying state (the only people who make decent money are those with a license) so as long as you are aware, you should do well....you have formidable experience for a LPN or LVN.....if you are careful as to how you market yourself, you should be okay....

If you private message me with your address, I will try to get you some newspapers/real estate info and mail it.

I have lived in Florida for 13 years and I am very happy... I have a good life. God Blesss!!!

Moved to the Florida Forum for more responses. Good luck!

I moved in the Gainesville area 2 months ago. There are 3 major hospitals to work in, VA, Shands, N. Fl. The area is nice but I was quite suprised at how expensive the houses are. We decided not to buy in Gainesville, most of what the realtor showed us were old that needed major renovations for about 200,000. It is a beautiful area, lots of places to eat & shop. Definately a college town. I don't miss the ice & snow of the north but I am still learning my way around. The local newspaper is called the gainesville sun. I have only heard good things about the University of FL. Good luck with your move.
