Well I've been in my travel corrections assignment for 3 weeks or so. Overall it's been a good experience. Like anything, it has good and bad. Good is the people I work with. Bad is the seemingly constant struggle between custody and medical. Also, there seems to be no leadership. Good is that I feel safer than I would in a hospital. Bad is the spray they use for cell extractions...very very bad. :o Good is that the charting is more than 2/3rds less than I have ever done...very very good.

We have a system where we have like 24 beds. 8 are acute psych; the next few can be either med or psych, and the remaining 7 are med. There are 3 nurses (sometimes 4) and one of the nurses does meds for all pts. The others chart and care for the pts. It can get hairy, but not so bad when you don't have to pass meds. Which begs the question...is the correctional facility subject to the staffing ratio laws in CA?

Also, this is of course my first travel assignment, so overall I'm loving this experience. I'm in a beautiful area, and the money is way cool.

:chuckle Hi Psychrn03. Sounds like you're having a good time! I seriously doubt if correctional facilities are subject to the staff ratio laws. I would love to try a traveling correctional assignment. Are you working for the travel company Supplemental? Do you know if they hire LPN's for traveling correctional jobs too? I'm really glad that this job is working out well for you.

Thank you. It really is. I am working for Supp. I do believe they do use LVNs, but I won't swear to it. If you don't have their number, just call 800-543-9399. If you have any other questions, feel free to message me.

Correctional facilities are not subject to nurse/patient ratios. Those only apply to acute care hospitals. However, if your facility is privatized they may have a contractually agreed upon staffing plan in place. If they are short nurses they get penalized.
