Can nursing probation fees and drug tests be claimed on taxes?

    I seriously doubt it.

    If you were paying for drug testing strictly for the purpose of obtaining employment, I'd think you could claim it as a business expense. But if you're being required to pay for testing and probation fees because you were disciplined by your state BON, you'd be well advised to avoid the appearance of trying to work the system to your advantage. Sometimes it's best just to take your lumps and learn from it, you know? :)

    Check with an accountant, but I cannot see why some of the expenses could be. Addiction is viewed as a disease, and the treatment aspects should be considered tax deductable. For instance, if you had to participate in intensive out-patient treatment, the mileage could be deductable, just as if you were seeking medical treatment. Participating in a program such as IAP or diversion is necessary to keep your license, to maintain your job, and if no laws were broken (using illegal substances, DUI, theft of narcotics, etc), why could you not write off UA testing fees, diversion program fees, etc. I am having my taxes done soon & will report back.
