Excelsior RN + NP

If you got your ADN through Excelsior and then went on to a NP program and graduated, will the state you are applying for a NP license care about your RN from Excelsior? For example, California does not currently accept RNs who graduated from Excelsior, but would they accept that same RN who graduated from a NP program and applied for NP licensure?

For licensure purposes, the states are concerned with where you got your original nursing education that prepared you for initial licensure. Nothing will ever "trump" or override that. NPs are all licensed as RNs and have additional licensure as NPs -- you still have to meet the state's requirements for "basic" RN licensure, and part of that is completing a basic nursing education program that meets the state's requirements. A person who originally completed her/his basic nursing education through Excelsior and then completed a nurse practitioner program will still (and always) be an Excelsior grad for RN licensure purposes.

Am curious-Why does CA not honor Excelsior RN's? If you pass the RN exam for licensure what does it matter where you went to school, then if you went on to obtain an advanced degree, surely someone honored the individual? I need some help to understand.

This is a question that I have wanted to have addressed for quite some time. I have heard some unfavorable things regarding this school and its program(s) from RNs who went and had problems following. Do like I do, go to the Nursing Board website in your state and look up the schools which they list as accredited in your area. Please pray for the nurses at Jackson Memorial Hospital who are getting "PINK" slips either today or tomorrow. Good luck

I did a little reading on this and about 12 states don't recognize this school-mainly due to the minimal clinical experience, BUT this school purportedly only admits those who already have many hours of clinical experience, LPN to RN for example.

I think that if you get a degree from this school and are wanting endorsement or licensure from one of these 12 states, I would have my employment experience detailed and be prepared for an individual appraisal. Some of these 12 states after review, if you don't have the clinical hours on record, require a supervised preceptorship for a period of time.

Gosh I am stunned at the pink slip situation. We need some good nurses in GA!

I am not familar with the other 11 state's rules but California has specific requirements for the pre-licensure RN program (BSN, AAS/ASN) to meet in granting eligbility for licensure as an RN. Excelsior utilizes individual appraisal of students' prior clinical or healthcare experience and gives credit to previous work experience towards the total number of hours required to graduate. This practice goes against California's Business and Professional Code that states that all prelicensure RN programs provide theory instruction that is concurrent with faculty-supervised clinical exposure. So it wouldn't even be enough to just make up deficient hours in clinicals as the state also require that the clinicals are completed concurrently with theory.

California denied me due to my excelsior ADN but advised me to get a BSN with clinical component from another school. trust me I believe they will accept your NP if its on there approved list.
