ERCP

Hello all I've been in GI for about 3 years and just now trying to learn how to tech an ERCP. Seems like there are so many different choices and different doctors want this or that. How does your facility train staff on how to be efficient at teching ERCPs. Once we heard that before on the job training, staff were sent to like a seminar out of town to learn. Thanks for your response.

Hi, eight years ago I worked in a GI clinic that did ERCP's. I was never a tech, RN's did moderate sedation. Our tech was a CNA. She had no special training, she learned the job with only "on the job" training. We only had one MD which made it easier for her and us, we didn't have to go through "which scope and instruments does Dr. so and so want..." etc. Our GI doctor wasn't a saint, but was a gentleman and worked with, trained, and taught, the CNA the tasks.

Maybe in a perfect world RN's and GI techs would get specialized training. Maybe there are GI nursing policies and standards at your facility? There is an Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) web site. They may have more up to date information.

But also maybe it isn't "that big a deal" not a huge difference from some more complex EGD's or colonoscopies that you are already dealing with? Also I love You Tube for learning. Of course you have to have a good basic knowledge of the subject but there are very good educational medical videos. I am sure you could find one's on ERCP's.
