It depends on the facility. Usually the designated educator assures the staff remains up to date on the many competencies required of the nurses....like conscious sedation. They ensure the staff have the certifications necessary for the department like ACLS, PALS, ENPC, BLS, TNCC and are usually the course organizer/instructor and the need to obtain these instructor certifications as well as other hospital/Joint Commission required competencies. They assist with the development of department policies and ensures the smooth education of all the staff. They orient new staff and set up orientation programs/residencies. They assure the compliance of the staff and introduce new trends in the standards of care. The set up triage protocols and discharge sriteria in compliance with the standards of care. They are familiar with the legal responsibilities of the department like sexual assault, crime scene/victim preservation as well as legal responsibilities to the public like EMTALA/COBRA/HIPAA.

They are usually ED nurses themselves and in today's world they are usually masters prepared nurse with an ED/critical care specialty.
