ED BKAT

This is interesting. I am in the process of hiring into an ED and the unit manager made a "oh, by the way" comment that part of my hiring process would involve taking the TEAS test. I am assuming she is referring to the nursing school entrance test? This is the first time I have had to take a test for a position. Usually, it is the usual background/reference check and drug test. I will be interested in finding out what kind of test you are going to take.

I recently took the BKAT for Intensive Care with my new position. It tested pretty general ICU knowledge. I have no idea where to get a copy though....

There's a contact person listed who you can get a copy from. And I remember from taking my BKAT that her facility's info was on the exam.

I need some help. Currently I am a travel nurse and thinking about taking a ED position at Baylor in Texas. They require a nurse to take this test and pass it with 85%. Does anyone out there know how a person can get a copy of htis test? I have signed on to this site and checked many sites to no avail. I was taken to some site from a Catholic University but there was nothing there. I need to see if I can find some information real quick! Thanks for you help.

Hope all is well. At any rate, I will also be required to take the ED BKAT next week which I'm quite nervous about. Do you have any advice as to what to review/study so I can increase my chances of passing? Although it was not intended for a weeding out process, I believe if we don't pass with an 80% we don't get hired.

Ok I literally just finished taking this test. There are 30 rythm strips and 100 multiple choice questions with at least 4 more strips. You need to know dig tox side effects, that dilantin will crystallize in dextrose, know what it means when vents alarm high or low, CVP measures what, tx of an MI, what hyperkalemia shows on the monitor in regards to T waves, know s/s of IICP and treatment of including meds, know the Babinski reflex and what it indicates, reveiw your s/s of DKA and tx of, review when NPH peaks, know urine spec. Gravity, review chest tubes and what is considered excessive drainage per hour, know normal urine output per hour, review peritoneal dialysis and what to do for a patient having abd pain, LIWS and ngt were on there as well as what fluid not to use in gastric lavage. Care of a 4 year old with a 105 temp on a hypothermia blanket, vacuum pressure setting for LIWS, nitroprusside and dopamine were on there, SB and tx of, care of a patient getting conscious sedation, know how many joules/kg initia defib to set at. Know when to externally pace and for what rythm, know what a-flutter can turn into, be clear on your type I and type II blocks, know your ABG values, review care of a patient with a c-spine injury, and review renal failure. It took me an hour to finish this exam. Good luck and I hope this helps anyone who has to take it :)
