Earpiece question.

Has anyone ever heard of a soft moulded earpiece? Honestly, mine is really uncomfortable... I find myself taking it out frequently just to rub my ear, then I don't want to put it back in. I hate it. I've seen those ones that are like a little foam earplug, but I was wondering if there is anything better.

Thanks!

Go to either the audiology department at your hospital or any hearing aid company and they can have one made out of soft foam molded just like the hard plastic type. Very comfortable, also works better as it seals out the noise better.

or be lazy and place a precordial doppler on the chest and turn up the sound - that way everybody can hear all those crazy sounds!!!

suss, quit bellyaching, nobody said anesthesia was supposed to be easy or comfortable. :chuckle

Yeah, like WntrMute2 said, go to the ENT department in your hospital and ask for one to be made. They are around $50 (at least the ones at my hospital were).

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions!

Interestingly, a CRNA I was working with yesterday told me she had to stop wearing hers because of chronic ear infections. That is actually a little disconcerting to me. I clean mine daily with an alcohol prep, cause the earwax thing really creeps me out, but I had no idea about the ear infections. Has anyone else heard of this?

I have heard of an increased incidence in ear infections. Personally, I find my soft earpiece uncomfortable after a while, my ear aches and it becomes difficult to get the damn thing in my ear after the third time. Sometimes if it's a stupid case to be wearing one I just let it kind of barely sit in there (we're required to wear them on every case). Anyway, I often trip over my tubing and feel like my ear is gonna rip out! :chuckle Then again I haven't had propofol squirted up there yet! :stone What I find the most uncomfortable about anesthesia school is all the equipment I make myself wear (stethoscope holder, pager, ID, ear piece, tubing draping into back pocket, pens and drugs galore out of my tip pocket), you know because everyone thinks it makes them look so cool :rotfl: And I especially like it when you can't get the right size scrubs and all the crap on your pants makes them start to falll down during an intubation :thankya:

I do not know if this will help your situation.

I use a fannypack with a PDA that has most of the reference i need. I do not share my ear piece so less chance of cross infection. Anything that does not fit into my fannypack, I usually do not need. I need my careplans handy, papers and pens/marker, those go into my top coat(OR can be bloody cold) pocket. I used to take my Brain and Mass Gen. but I would hardly open them. My PDA has most of the infor I need. I hope this helps.

Thanks air, I actually mean that my beeper, badge, and especially stehoscope holder pull my pants down, ha! Everything else I keep in a small bag and my scrub coat, it does get bloody cold in the OR, are you by chance from england? because I only hear english people saying that term.
