Hi Everyone!
I just started nursing school two weeks ago and I have my first big assignment due, I need to write an 8 page paper about something pertaining to nursing and then give a 10-15 minute speech on it. I've been really curious about E.R nursing so I thought it would be a good idea to write my paper on it to hopefully learn more about the field. I was just wondering if any E.R nurses had any suggestions for things to include in the paper. I was going to talk about duties, certifications, wages, typical hours, and how the roles of E.R nurses has evolved...any other suggestions would be great!!
Thanks :redpinkhe

What is the emotional aspect of working as an emergency nurse?

I did one on the history of emergency nursing. It was actually pretty interesting to do - especially since I hate research and writing papers.

I think through put in the ED, as it is always a hot topic and an issue, would be a good angle. You could just briefly touch on the major factors that cause pts to wait, delay pt dispositions, holding pts in the ED, etc.
Also staff safety in the ED would be a good topic. You'd be shocked by the statistics on ED nurse assaults and individual nurses' stories and the severity of the attacks. Of course, with this being 2 weeks into a new nursing program, maybe you should go a little lighter.....how do you feel about public health care? Ha-ha-ha! Just joking! Don't go there!
Thanks for your suggestions, I really appreciate it!

Hey good for you:
My suggestions would be the extended roles that A and E (sorry ED for my american friends!) nurses have.
The multiple roles the nurses play covering all specialities, all ages, all conditions.
The added factor of substance misuse and the dispraportionately high number of patients still under the influence and the issues that raises in repsect of patient and staff safety.
There is loads of information out there so good luck with the paper, even better luck with your training and here's to a future A and E nurse :)
