dr order for ice?

Hi there,

quick question... do you need a doctors order to give a patient an ice pack?? I know that this probably isn't necessary for patients who have a swelling from an injury or infection (?). But aren't there some diagnoses and procedures that require using caution with the use of ice packs??

Also when do you choose heat applicaton over cold??
