Last year I visited my sister at Fort Belvoir and fell in love with the area. I heard that some highly needed DOD employees (nurses for example) can live in post housing provided that a)units are available and b) You pay "rent". Is this right? TIA

A lot of base housing has gone privatized - which means a civilian company owns/leases/ and operates it. On some bases they are opening the housing up to all civilians if there is an excess of housing.; of course they need to apply, etc, etc. It is my understanding that if it is a traditional base housing which is still run by the government then a DOD civilian would not qualify for base housing. Also if there is a waiting list for housing and DOD is allowed to get on the list, they may get bumped more often the not. The best way to find out is to call the housing office of the place you are interested in and ask directly - each place is different.
Hope that helps,
