Hi I am looking into interviewing with doctors without borders...however the website said that its very competitive. It also noted that education in tropical medicine is an asset as well as training experience. Does anyone know if that is true? or if they just would like you do have the education...

Specializes in ICU, CVICU.

I am not certain but I'm pretty sure you HAVE to have the experience. I believe there is a lot of autonomy over there and experience is a must. Again, I'm not positive on this...maybe someone else here will have more first-hand experience. Good luck!

Specializes in neuro, ICU/CCU, tropical medicine.

I interviewed with MSF about 10 years ago before I had any tropical medicine training. I never heard back from the recruiter, but a couple of years later, after I had completed a diploma in tropical medicine, I reapplied and was told I had a good interview from my previous interview.

I think if it's something you really want to do, then there's no reason you shouldn't apply, but also look at the international medical vounteers association (http://www.imva.org) for other opportunities.

If you're interested in tropical medicine training, I got my TM diploma at Tulane. I'm going for a training program at West Virginia U next week.

Look at the ASTMH (www.astmh.org/certification/certificate.cfm) website for TM programs approved for TM certification.

Good luck!
