Do you need a BSN to work in NYC?

Hi all!

I'm a recent nursing school graduate from a two-year ADN program. I'm interested in living and working in NYC and I was wondering if anyone here knew if the hospitals there require RN's to have a BSN in order to be hired?

If it counts for anything, I'm currently working towards my BSN and will be done with the program in May. I also have three years of experience working as a nursing assistant on various med/surg and tele floors and three years of experience as an endoscopy technician. I currently work as an RN in my hospital's endoscopy suite and I plan on applying for jobs in NYC around November, so I'll have a few months of experience by then.

A lot of hospitals in my state will hire RN's if they are working towards their BSN. Does this hold true for hospitals in NYC?

Any insight? A lot of the hospital's websites say they will hire ADN's who are matriculated into a BSN program. Is this realistic?

I already have my BSN so I'm not much help. But I can tell you it's rather hard without 2 years RN experience (many networks won't fully consider your app until you have this). My advice would be to start applying now and see if you get calls back & to build an application routine (having stuff on file). NYC HR departments move slow, so don't hold your breath. There are new grads who job hunt for 6+ months without seeing results in NYC. I think your perfect timeline would go something like: finish BSN while getting the first year RN experience, apply apply apply for every open position with every hospital, hopefully land something next summer and make the big move!

You have experience as an NA, not a nurse, totally different, but it still might help you. Hospitals are still hiring ADN/ASN new grads, however, it's still slim pickings. The good thing is, it looks like you're already enrolled in a BSN program, so that definitely looks favorable. Good luck!
