Dismissed from nursing program

Published

Hi everyone! I will try to make this is short as possible, but basically I was dismissed from the first semester of nursing program at a community college in Spring 2022. My grandmother passed away at the beginning of the semester, and I found out that my dad had very few months to live due to his liver disease (which I truly didn't understand the severity of until later on). I was working full time and attending my dad's weekly appointments to the hospital as his support. It became a lot for me and took a huge mental toll. I failed two courses and did not try to appeal at the time because at that point my dad's condition was so bad that they gave him less than a month to live. My school doesn't allow you to reapply for the nursing program until 6 semesters has passed, not including Summer semesters. It is very difficult to find other programs near me because they typically don't allow for applicants that have failed nursing in another school. I have been contemplating writing a letter to the dean to ask for reentry but is it even worth it since it's been over a year since I have failed out? What would I even write about in the letter?

I am so sorry for your loss.  Yes, it is worth it to write a letter to the Dean.  Explain the circumstances.  Worst case, they just say no.  If it's been over 1 year, it's almost 6 semesters, anyway.

Also, check with other nursing schools.  It doesn't hurt to ask to see if you can get accepted elsewhere, once you explain the circumstances.

It is perfectly understandable that you were not able to keep up with nursing school

Best wishes
