Discouraged about NS

UGH, just one of those days. I called to check in on my NS application for my number 1 and number 2 choice and found out they calculated my last 60 units GPA to be 2.60. I had calculated a much different and much higher GPA. So I go on the internet and check out a tech program one of the local hospitals offer and found out after graduation the techs can make as much as nurses and you don't have to get all frustrated about GPAs and acceptance letters and all that stuff....and costs $10K as compared to the NS I applied to which costs more than 50K.

Starting to wonder if Nursing is for me considering the trouble and stress of just getting into a program. blah...:uhoh21:

What kind of tech are you referring to? There are many types of techs that work in the hospital and some, like X-ray techs, can make as much as a nurse and sometimes more starting out but over time a nurse makes a lot more money.

A new program from Kaiser just started called END tech for electroneurodiagnostic technician (hope i spelled that right) and I spoke to the director today and she was very encouraging about that career path. I think I am just frustrated living in the bay area and finding it so difficult to just get in a program already. Here I am, wanting to spend thousands of dollars on a private school, but is it really worth it if they don't even want to accept me already. I feel like I've done well on all my pre-reqs only to just keep waiting. Yeah, I didn't do well 10 years ago when I first entered college, so why do I feel like those grades are coming back to haunt me now. i know i should not give up. is it like this in other parts of the country? or is it just california? or maybe applying to my 6th/7th (lost count) program is starting to wear me down.

You can always find schools that look at your cumulative GPA, and depending on how many units you've taken since your less-than-stellar academic past, you may be competitive. Also, Samuel Merritt looks at your last 60 units, if you've done really well in your pre-reqs you may be close to a 4.0.

I found out that the lady who gave me my GPA probably gave me cumulative. I used an online GPA calculator to calculate my last 60 units and it was higher. I guess I'm just getting a little anxious with the waiting. I wish December were here already...Whenever I feel down or blue I go to the scrapbook store and it makes me feel all better again. Even if I don't buy anything.

Just because it is a hassle, it doesn't mean you should just give up on it...most things in life worth getting require a lot of hard work to get them. If you really want to be a nurse, you will find a way around your predicament but I don't think you should settle on a career just because it is easy to get to and makes a lot of money. For instance consider this, how much movement (vertical, lateral, promotions, etc) is there in the tech industry versus nursing? What about hours? Just because the starting pay is the same and tuition is less doesn't mean it is a better fit for you. I know I don't know your entire story so take my advice with a grain of salt but, sometimes you just have to decide that whatever is in your way isn't going to stop you from getting where you want to go....don't give up!

Thank you for your words of encouragement. You guys are right. I didn't spend all that time doing pre-reqs only to give up on being a nurse. You guys remind me why I decided to pursue nursing; because of the compassion and kindness I felt in the hospital. Now that I am almost completely done with pre-reqs, my impatient side is kicking in. nathanielandarianna, I think I know the program you are referring to (rthymes with Samuel Ferret), and the exact thing which happen to you (GPA miscalculation) happened to my friend, when he applied there. He got in at another school, and is just finishing his first year of an ADN program, and is happier for it.

You just have to accept that these things are going to happen, as long as people are in the loop. And that it is not a reflection on your fitness to be a nurse. I've read some of your other posts, and have enjoyed your perspective on your journey towards nursing. Just keep plugging away, and you'll get there. :)

I hope you get into the school of your choice and there are more schools out there besides SMC. It sounds like you might get in anyway though. Good luck.
