go to the interview and see what they are offering you. Ask about the job, your responsibilities and compensation. You won't know unless you go and you might kick yourself llater for turning it down before finding out about it.

Dilemma, rather. I have only been at my hospital job less that 3 months, but I'm having a hard time adjusting. Some nights are better than others and I know everyone says you need to give it a year. Recently, I had a job interview with an Internal Medicine Office. The interview went horribly in my mind. I was ill prepared because it happened rather quickly. However, I'm suppose to meet with the Dr. that I will be working for tomorrow. I'm just really torn as to what to do. I've been given advice to stick with my current job for a year from some and others (including my husband) are saying go for the office job. I'm currently trying to decide whether to call the office and beg off from the interview tomorrow. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. I guess I'm fearful that I won't get the office job. I don't want to do a disservice to this doctor. He is wonderful, but I'm afraid I may be underqualified for the position.

I think it does take a year or more to really get comfortable in your skills .But as I posted to another thread-you'll be tooling along feeling really competent and proud of yourself and then you'll up and do something stooopid.That's nursing for you-in any setting..Highest of the highs to the lowest of the lows-we all go through it....I can't help you with your decision-too many variables (pay? duties?back-up?") But-I would stay in the hospital for a yr for the experience....

I think it really comes down to what your career goals are. I never pictured myself an office nurse, but I took the interview and got the job. I ADORE it. It's not extremely technical nursing, but it goes to the very root of it. Listening to and advocating for patients. I realize now that this is what I was cut out for. I always knew I never wanted the typical floor nursing job. I just didn't know what else was out there. A year of med surg wouldn't have hurt, but it certainly wasn't necessary for this position. HOWEVER, it is hard to go back to a hospital position after you a 'just' a clinic nurse. There are lots of negative perceptions of what a clinic nurse does. You won't keep up your technical skills, you just won't.

If you want to be a clinic/office nurse forever, I'd say go for it. Either way, I'd still go to the interview and see what's out there. It certainly can't hurt! Good Luck and let us know what you decide.

Well, I had my interview with the doctor today. It went really well. I'll just have to wait and hopefully hear something by tomorrow or Friday. I really feel good about it and if it is offered to me I'll probably jump at the chance. Understand, although I'm in my first year of nursing and a new graduate, I'm in my second career (pushing 40 with a vengence). This may just be what I need to do. Thanks to those who responded.
