Members of the state's nursing board on Friday upheld an earlier decision that school nurses cannot delegate the administration of a drug for severe seizures.

Some school nurses and the West Virginia Epilepsy Foundation had urged board members to reverse a March decision, which said only licensed school nurses or medics and not other trained school staff could administer Diastat, a drug in gel form that is given rectally.

Laura Rhodes, a registered nurse and executive director of the nursing board, said the board's position was consistent with the law and in the best interest of children's safety.
