where are you located? i work for dci in alabama. the company is ok, they definitely have things that could change but that is everywhere. the main thing is disagree with is the pay... what are you currently making now. they started an rn out the other day at $17.50... not too good in my opinion..
I am located near pittsburgh, pa the pay they offered is $23.00/hr. I did tour the facility very nice compared to where I am working now. What is your nurse ratio? Do you work 4 ten hr days?
there are 2 rn's and 1 tech on the floor. charge nurse helps out when she can. we have a 3:1 ratio most days, sometimes 4:1.. love the job, pay just is low...

I am in my 9th year with DCI and think that they are a great company. I think the pay scale is regional and in my area it is exceptional and very competitive.
The health benefit has come a long way and is now the best I know of around. The retirement is awesome and like none I have ever seen. The company is not for profit and really puts back into the community for research. The founder, Dr Johnson, is all about the patient and their needs it is really nice to see and feel the care and dedication to patient care rather than how we can cut corners all the time in order to pad a pocket.
I would highly suggest DCI as an employer.
Good Luck

Wow.. that is the best news I've heard re chronic outpt. facilities in a long while! :)
I do miss dialysis a lot, but not enough to go back to the horrors of the mega millions for profit companies!
I did take the position and working 4 10's , I work half chronic unit , half acutes. I agree it is an owesome company and the staffing is unreal comparted to where I worked before (a for profit co.) at DCI they provide enough staff to ensure a safe treatment for all patients.
I am very glad that I took the position.

awwwwwwwww... I am SO happy for you ! Really makes me want to do dialysis again when I hear that.
But I also love HH.. gee.... 3 days HH and 2 days dialysis... THAT would work !!!
Our old unit was replaced by a brand new one with all the new "stuff"... it is awesome. What a difference! And of course they got to move in shortly after I started HH.
It is right next door to my HH agency as well! :chuckle So I get to see all my pals there still.
Sadly, it's still the same company, though, with all its downfalls. So no matter how new the unit, how nice the new "stuff".. it's still not worth it if the company/management suks.
It's really too bad.

I have worked for DCI for 8 yrs. The salary may be slightly lower than others, but it also depends on how much experience someone has. The retirement benefits are the best. Get into the plan ASAP. I am happy working for the company. Working for non profit is nice too. We are frugal, but don't have to account for every band-aid we use. Our staffing is good too. When I read some of the posts about other units it is unbelievable what is expected of the staff.
*sigh*
How nice it must be. For patients and staff alike. WONDERFUL. So happy for all. :)

i am thinking about relocating to the sacramento ca from the northwest, and working for dci in that area. i would like to know what the dci clinic culture is like? ie teamwork, attitudes, staffing, management style, education opportunities , housing what area to live in, ect. the last clinic i worked for was a davita clinic. i was the evening charge. i was the only nurse in the building after 16:00 till the last patient was rinsed back around midnight and we had 21 stations. i was run ragged, did all the patient assessment, meds and scared that i could not be at two emergences at the same time. i only lasted 10 months. davita ran us all ragged most of us didn't get any breaks for a 10 to 12 hour shift. davita also had some interesting policies and procedures that were more financially based and not based on sound medical practice. we were on reuse, and as long as they passed the reuse testing they would be used sometimes 40 or 50 times. i could tell many stories about the staff and difficult working environment. they do their davita school which is just a bunch team building exercises to get the staff as productive as possible and build team loyalty so they can keep working you to death. it has taken me several years to be able to step back from that experience and want to go back to work in a dialysis clinic, i do miss the patients, the families and making friends with staff. i miss the critical thinking skills and giving the best individualized treatment for optimal outcomes to each patient be my personal goal. thanks for your feedback. harrison
Harrison,
I am a die hard DCI employee. As long as they will have me I will continue to give them my best. I have not worked at a DaVita but I am sure there are some great Davitas as well as not so great programs but I think the same can be true about DCI. DCI has a great mission and I really like the fact that it is nonprofit so more money is freed up to be injected into research and not pushed into the pockets of hire ups. As for atmosphere, training and the likes..... I know that the atmosphere here where I am is fun loving, professional and patient first in attitude. Training is a 12 week program and has evolved over the years into a very structured and organized program. As for cost cutting, I am sure especially now with the new bundling package that cost cutting will be around for a long time no matter if you are in a for profit or nonprofit organization. Just because one says they are non profit doesn't mean that they are for no profit. It is important to turn a profit in order to stay in business. The things that are done with the profit are what make that difference. Reuse vs. non-reuse: we currently are a non-reuse program but it is up to the clinic as to whether they are reuse or non. With reuse there are guidelines that indicate if the dialyzer can be used again and how many times it can be used so it is not surprising to me to hear you say that as long as they pass test that the dialyzer can be used. The test indicates how much percent of the dialyzer fibers are open and will continue to function. The last time I used reuse we were able to use the dialyzer up to 99 times if it passed test but they rarely got that many passes usually more like 25-50 times kind of like what you are saying.
So I guess in short DCI is a great company to work for. They have probably the best benefits package that I have ever had the opportunity to receive from an employer. There are good McDonalds and bad McDonalds out there just as is true about any other business including DCI. If you have a desire to be back in dialysis I would say at least give DCI a chance Dr Johnson who founded the company still lives today and is an active part of the direction in which the company is steered.
Good luck with your relocation.
