Current student, need advice!

Hello,

So I was investigated by the BON as a CNA when I self reported for an infraction for intoxication (I was on private property, wasn’t driving or caring for anyone). I also self reported a dismissed charge for falsifying a police document trying to get my ex husband out of a DV charge (stupid I know). The charge was dismissed after a plea in abeyance period. Both of these charges were in Utah. I now live in Colorado. I had made a post about this over a year ago.

The BON wasnt interested in the dismissed charge but they did have me evaluated on the infraction. They cleared me and said they didn’t see me being a danger to my patients and basically sent me a letter telling me that abusing any substance is dangerous and be careful.

I am now a nursing student (finally) and starting this August after completing all my prereqs/coreqs. Due to circumstances surround my charges, I haven’t tried to get them expunged yet. I don’t think this will be an issue with licensure since I’ve already been investigated and cleared by the BON (but perhaps I’m wrong since CNA work and RN work is way different. Although in Utah I did distribute narcotics and other meds under my certificate).

But do you all think it will be an issue with my license or they will give me board orders? Also, what will getting a job at a hospital look like? I was wanting to do a new grad ICU program after I graduate but I’m worried that a hospital wouldn’t hire me with these charges (even though one is dismissed and the other is just an infraction).

I understand if there is some judgement here. I was in a really bad place when I got the intox charge and it’s a charge that doesn’t even exist in my state now :( and was really trying to save my marriage when I lied to the police. In Utah once a DV situation occurs the state takes over and presses charges. So I filled out a form stating I lied about everything and they dropped my ex husbands charges and pressed charges on me instead. Both were terrible ideas on my behalf and I fully accept that. But I can’t go back and change my stupid decisions.

No judgement here. We (at least most, I think) make stupid choices when we are young.

If you can get it expunged, I would try. You may also want to visit the Recovery Board/Forum for some helpful information. Mostly, I would really try to consult an attorney who specializes in license defense. Better to take care of it now, rather than wait and see.

Good luck and congratulations on nursing school! :nurse:
