Corrections Nursing?

Specializes in Neonatal ICU, Pediatrics, some ER.

My husband is being transferred to the Baton Rouge, LA area and from what I have seen, there aren't any jobs in my specialty available in the area. I have been considering making this an opportunity for a change of pace. I have noticed that there are quite a few positions in the state of Louisiana for corrections nursing. From what I have read on the internet regarding this specialty, it seems like it could be interesting, and a good opportunity for patient teaching as well.

My question is for those with experience with this field, what do you like and not like about it? Any experience with the Louisiana prison system as a nurse? Is it worth giving it a try?

Thanks in advance for input!

I don't know anything about corrections nursing, but would like to welcome you to BR. :)

Not sure about LA prisons, but a friend of mine worked in a TX prison, and really liked it :)

Hmm. I'll have to check it out. I heard that Oschner is a good place to work.
