Considering the Army

Hello all,

New to the board. I am considering joining the Army/Air Force. I have a BSN and 16yrs direct pt care experience. I am currently enrolled in a CNS program.

I am finding I need more support to give total focus to school. My love is oncology. Any thoughts? BTW, I am soon to be 43yo. Is that too old?

Cmon guys, help me out! I've seen people reading-any input?

Hello,

If I were you I would definately join the air force. Before anyone starts flaming me, I am not bashing the army but just from first hand experience I am in the air force and my husband use to be in the army (note I said use to be):lol2: The air force is very family oriented and they have some awesome programs for school. And don't worry about your age, they will take you up to age 47 as long as you don't have any health problems like asthma, or psychological problems etc. I have been in the AF for 8 yrs and I would not trade it for the world. I am currently in nursing school full time and six months before I graduate I will apply to become an officer. So just from my experience with the army with my husband the air force is much better. Just put it this way the AF is more family oriented. We are like one big family ;) Oh and they will help pay for some loans too so keep that in mind and you will get incentive pay for being a CRNA.

AirForce or Army are both great ideas...The only thing with your age is you are not retirement eligible...mandatory retirement is 62....You would have to have 20yrs in by the time you were 62y/o. With the AirForce in particular you will be denied any long term educational opportunities/PhD etc., because you are not retirement eligible. The pay with benefits would be similar to what you would make on the outside. There is also limited assignments where you will be able to work with oncology pts. I would suggest talking with a healthcare recruiter from both branches and setting up interviews with a chief nurse from both the Army & AirForce.

Good Luck!
