Hey, does anyone have some good tips or a good template for me? I want to try concept mapping as I'm cementing some A&P material, but I've never done it before and I am not sure how to start or what level of detail to go into. My problem is that while I can memorize flash cards till the cows come home, I'm having a lot of trouble integrating/applying what I learned on the flash cards and I need to do something differently. Any help is greatly appreciated :)

I am the same. I can memorize, but it does me no good when I'm actually trying to apply the info. I've thought about concept mapping, but haven't gotten around to trying it yet. So far, my best studying is actually learning the information, not just memorizing it. I read the chapter, then I actually write the questions after the chapter and answer them. Then I go and do the computerized tests to to access my level of understanding. The questions I miss, I reread the topics and try again the next day. I go back over my notes from class, and they make more sense after doing all that. I find it makes it easier to evaluate questions on the test when I can look at the bigger picture and pull bits and pieces from the material read. My instructor this semester does not test on memorization per se. She is more concept/application based, so memorization was not working for me. I hope this helps.

I did A&P 1&2 through Portage! I got through each course in about 12 weeks, but I could have gotten through it more quickly if I'd studied more efficiently. I was really struggling with condensing the information because I'd been out of school for 5 years or so when I started, so how quickly you get through it really depends on your study habits and how much time you can devote to it. There are review questions at the end of every section and as long as you can answer those questions no problem and label the fairly simple diagrams, you'll ace the tests. The labs are just videos that you can take extensive notes on (I would actually transcribe the lecture on my laptop while watching) and then the lab tests are open book (but they're so easy you probably won't need your notes).
ETA: I also found a simple, free concept mapping software through MindMaple. I'm using it right now in chemistry and it's very helpful! Once I get through chem (hopefully just a couple more weeks), I'll go back and concept map A&P with it.
