Common Medications

Hi, I am an ER nurse but recently took a position teaching a med/surg clinical rotation. One of my goals before clinicals start is to make sure the students are as prepared as possible with common medicaitons. I have quite a list started but as I do not typical work in a Med/Surg evironment, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me.

Thanks

Lexie

Big task considering it could be virtually every med as there are many more MD's prescribing on the floors (vs. ED). I would be sure to impress on the student that your will ALWAYS encounter a med you do not remember or recognize. So, be sure to know how to access resources. And how to know if drugs are IV compatible. And what to know about IV fluids (hypertonic, hypotonic and isotonic especially).

I agree with the above... there's always going to be a new medicine that you don't know, and you need to know how to look it up... some of the drugs I give commonly are

Lasix

Colace

Digoxin

Flagyl

Ambien

Lopressor

Lisinopril

K-dur

I could go on for a while, but I guess this all depends on the types of patients on the floor... It might help to ask one of the nurses on the floor or the nurse manager... In school we had to do standard drug cards for certain drugs, and it always seemed that the patients didn't take those drugs...

Lexie,

I was wondering if you could send me the list of medications you had. I am currently enrolled in an ADN program and this semester I am in Med Surge on the Surgical floor. I have to make drug cards and think your list would help me be more prepared before clinicals.

Thanks!

Jessica

To that list of meds, you can add:

Protonix

Levothyroxine

Vancomycin

Rocephin

Bactrim

Levaquin

Solumedrol

Reglan

Zofran

narcotics - especially Dilaudid, Morphine and Fentanyl

Hope that helps -

Thanks for the list. I appreciate it.

When I started on my floor as a new grad, I asked the pharmacy for a list of the most common used meds on my floor. They were nice enough to make me a list! I would recommend contacting them and see if they can make you one.
