Dear nursing colleague

Im an IEN moved recently to Ontario and following now with CNO for my RN evaluation.

For now I’m registering for StFX University Distance Nursing Program to complete my educational gap for 6 topics, hopefully will finish by May 2021. by that time, my Evidence of Practice will be expired April 2021. Can I have the correct advice how to renew the clinical practice, I need to plan things a head kindly. I have reached few universities & colleges, and no one can offer Clinical placement/training for me.

Thank you for kind advice.

Hi Budoor,

To meet expired safe practice requirement you could either return to the country where you are currently registered to practice for 400 hours or you take some of the bridge programs offered in Ontario colleges to meet your safe practice requirement. You can read more on Cno's website.

@Fola thank you fola .im aware of these options. Unfortunatly I cant travel back to home country . And all the colleges in ontario offer full 2 years program not only the clinical 400 hours by itself. I have submitted an inquiry to CNO but seems the work take much time due to covid!

Thanks again for your help!

If this helps, a lot of Korean nurses go back to their own country and work for a few months to update their clinical practice. I know a few nurses who did this and CNO accepted their small amount of work experience.

Hi Budoor,

Inquire from George Brown College. I just did my clinical practice and consolidation of practice from George Brown College to reinstate my safe practice. I was required to take 11 courses before I could enroll for the clinical practice and consolidation. Inform the program coordinator that you are currently taking courses from stfx, those might lessen the courses that will be required for you to take. This is the link:

I was in a similar position regarding clinical practice, but luckily I could return to practice in my home country to meet the requirement. If you choose to stay in Canada, you will most likely have to do a full program with 400 clinical hours as part of the course. Otherwise, you can practice in your country of registration if still holding registration there for as small a period of time as 1 day. I kid you not! I nearly fell off my seat when I was discussing this with the CNO on a phone call. As long as you can provide a RN job description with how many hours worked, flight tickets & boarding passes, stamped passport showing entry and exit, a letter from the nurse manager stating how you met or did not meet the RN responsibilities as outlined in the job description, evidence of registration from the nursing board.

I returned home and worked for 5 days and after the CNO reviewed all relevant documents I met the requirement.

Best of luck as you continue through the process and congrats for getting to this point. It seems like a neverending process

Updates : that through some friends I got the best 2 options for me  . Either to join Rncompitencies program next sept or join york University Winter 2022. Both options will cover my educational gaps and 400 clinical hours in 2 years duration. Yes its neverending process really . THANKS again for reaching out..You stay safe??

Thanks again for your help!

I did 2 online courses at George Brown which regardless help get a better understanding of practicing in canada 1. Nursing in Ontario 2. Physical Assessment. I managed to avoid the IENCAP with these and job descriptions from all past employers. The course coordinator at George Brown was super helpful.

Good Luck with it all!

@Caranne_1 thank you dear again I have already reached to GB college and seems this courses will not help me to cover any gap in my evaluation . Oh boy things is getting harder every year LOL . I have a nurse manger working with me in home nursing agency he had only 8 months of bridging by 2014 with mohawk university but sadly this program no more available ;(

Thank you again dear it means alot for me to find your reply and support ?Stay blessed ?

Hi budoor,

I was wondering did you get your cno competency gap covered by stfx. Did CNO approve your courses from stfx? As I am also planning to get register in stfx. As it's expensive I do not want to spend money and time in case if cno won't approve it. Please let me know.

I am also in same position,  please reply
