I'm in the Memphis,TN downtown area. I was wondering if anyone knew of any free CNA course being giving. I called the Red Cross and they told me that they no longer have the training, to look into local Nursing Homes. I could use my financial aid and sit out a semester from my RN school, but I dont want to do that. So if anyone knows of a Nursing home or anything giving free courses I would greatly appreciate it! Also any affordable schools in the memphis area would be great. The only one I found which was a 4wk course close by was 1,700.
Thanks!

please please don't sit out of nursing school to do a CNA course! When are you to graduate?
Baptist offers a program for nursing students where you can be a tech if you are more than 1 yr from graduating, or an intern if you are less than a year to graduate - these positions pay more than a CNA so you might check out thsoe. Pretty much all the hospitals have well paying positions if you are less than 1 yr from graduation.
Also - where do you want to work? Call them and ask what they offer for those wanting to become a CNA. I know there is high turnover for CNA and we reallllly like to have them staffed lol - so maybe hospitals would offer something?
Next time i go to work I'll ask some CNA's where they got their training too for you. Also, at one time i talked to a nursing home (not in memphis) about working as a CNA. Because I already had Foundations they said if I brought them my curriculum there was something they could do with the state to let that sub for classes and I could just take the test. Didn't pursue that option as I got an intern position paying well over 50% more.

The best advice I could give you would be to get your phone book and start calling all the local nursing homes in your area. Ask each about their CNA training courses, how much they pay and if you have to sign a contract. Find a nh that is near you and that pays well, since you will be paid for your training. Since you will be in school, you might want to check night shift openings. Good luck!
