CNA Orientation...how long?

Published

How long should an CNA orientation be and what does it consist of?

I just had two orientations one for an on-call job and a second one for a part-time/on-call.

The first one lasted two days and I never heard from them again. They didn't even have parking, you have to come very early or deal with the meter and risk getting a ticket.

My second orientation, the person in charge didn't know what to tell us or what paperwork to file. I had to tell them what paperwork should be filed. The orientation lasted for four days and was already witness to one CNA verbally abusing a patient (this was after this person was telling me to be kind to the patients). They also have to much internal politics. I've only been working as a CNA for a couple of days and I feel burned out.

I like the work and really want to help the patients. I'm currently looking for another job.

Specializes in geriatrics, dementia, ortho.

Most places I've been orientation lasts a week or two. It depends on how they organize it; you might have one shift for each "run" in the facility, or you might just have a certain number of days in order to learn what you need to know. If it's the latter, see if they can give you or help you make a list of the things you'll need to know by the time your orientation is over (how/where/what to chart, where supplies are, chain of command, how/where to clock in and out, etc.).
