CNA in Alberta

Published

Hello all!

I'm a CNA in Minnesota, I'm planning on moving to Alberta, specifically Edmonton, sometime this coming 2016 summer. I was wondering if it were possible there to take the CNA License exam without having to take the class? I'd like to get there and start working right away while going to classes. And I also had a question about if there's a difference between a certified nursing assistant and a health care aide there? In some post secondary schools there I saw that they're providing both and I just wanted to know what that's all about!

Also, since I'm primarily planning on moving to Alberta on a study permit, do I need to apply for a work permit to work as a CNA? I know I wouldn't need one if I get a job at the college I decide on attending. And if I do need to apply for a work permit to work as a CNA, how will I get approved for it if you need to have a job set up before you get accepted for a work permit?

Thank you to all who respond and help me in trying to figure all this stuff out! I'm still researching about all the things I need to do before I pack up and leave!

Not likely as Canadian equivalent to CNA is 9-12 months training where US it's 6-8 weeks (LPN/RPN is 2 yrs full time, RN is BScN minimum). You likely need a work permit in addition to student visa. Check immigration for details
