clinical documentation nurse

Nurses General Nursing

Hello! Can anyone give me feedback about working as a clinical documentation nurse? I passed the qualifying test for this position(it was a surprise since test was very difficult) and is scheduled for a series of panel interview including an interview with the chief financial officer. I have a great job but my family schedule is forcing me to think about the future since my job requires me to take emergency calls every so often. If anyone has some input about this position, I would greatly appreciate it!!Thanks!!!

Specializes in Critical Care, Education.

This seems to be an up and coming focus area for nurses who have computer/financial savvy. In my organization, we have two different types. Some of them work directly with physicians (training, coaching, support, etc) and others are in our CI department. I think the experience/education qualifications are higher for the CI ones - most of them are called something like 'clinical analyst' or something. They (CI) work on improving/maintaining documentation interface & design as well as ensuring the accurate interface (data capture) for quality, safety, billing, & other types of processes.

Kudos for you! Sounds like it should be very interesting.

Specializes in Hospital Education Coordinator.

Is this the same as Informatics Nurse? If so, it can be a good career path. Consider certifying as a specialty to command better pay

Specializes in PACU/GI/CDIS??.

Wow! Congrats to you! I am praying I pass.. I'm completely interested in this position, know quite a bit about it, yet know nothing about the test. I heard it was awful.... I will be taking it in the next 2 weeks and from what I have read it seems like an ICU competency exam... Does that sound about right? My interviewer said at a "sister" hospital the first 14 candidates ALL failed. Yikes.

If they get into drug dosing and things like that, it would be ridiculous. Considering a lot of our "near perfect" qualifications, for the test to be a deal-breaker is pretty disheartening. I know I need to refresh my knowledge on some things, I just can't figure what could be so difficult?? I will assume it's like the NCLEX, but focused on critical care... safe to assume?

It also seems no one on here really wants to give info on it...despite having taken it. it's not like we're competing for the same job! LOL. I really need this job, and I know she wants me to pass this test as they want the program to go live at the end of June. Is anyone willing to offer some information regarding where to focus? Besides ABG analysis, sepsis, MI, CHF, and the like... Someone mentioned ortho questions? Hmmmmm.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am per diem now with no benefits, (and 4 herniated discs) so this is a pretty big deal for me. I am a good test taker but not if I go into something completely clueless about the content.

Thanks to anyone!
