Childbirth vids?

Just wondering if anybody knows about any free, informational (for nursing students?) childbirth videos on the www. Because of the fact that I am gonna be at the pregnancy observation ward during my clinicals, chances are that i am not gonna be seeing any childbirths.... Which of course isnt cool. So if anyone knows about any videos, I would appreciate it if you made a little post here. Thanks in advance people ,)

There are TONS of childbirth reality shows these days on the Discovery Channel series. (cable/satellite TV). If your sole purpose is to see a birth on video or TV then be sure to check them out.

Among them are

A Baby Story

Maternity Ward

Babies: Special Delivery

They do NOT necessarily represent a true reality as to what ALL goes on in childbirth(tv never does)-----but do provide a good cross section of people and situations to see----from very low risk homebirthing/midwife center births on Baby Story (at times) to extremely high risk problematic pregnancies and deliveries on the other two.

Good luck. I am sorry I can't point you to any free birthing videos out there. I know of none of them.

Please go to the director of your nursing program and implore him/her to arrange at least one observation day in a busy L&D department. I truly believe that witnessing a birth ought to be a requirement for nursing students. I attended a BSN program where our clinical time was very limited, and even though I spent a few clinical days on L&D, never got to see a birth. The following semester, our med/surg instructor (a new mother herself) became indignant when she realized just how many of us had not witnessed a birth. She took it upon herself to arrange such a day for each of us, and I'll be forever grateful to her for doing so. It cemented in my mind my interest in maternal-child health, which I pursued after graduation.

Even for those who may not be interested in L&D as a career, there are certain experiences which I believe every nursing student should have: witnessing a birth, caring for a dying patient, observing a surgical procedure, caring for pediatric patients, caring for psych patients, and providing care outside the hospital in such settings as an office, school, or home. These experiences are important, in my opinion, and too often missed.

Good luck to you1

I think that is an excellent suggestion Jolie : frankly I don't 'get" a nursing program that does not allow/mandate observation of childbirth as part of its OB rotation.
