Changing jobs???

I am a new grad RN who just started working in July 2008. I applied for a position out of the area and that NM asked to talk with my current NM. I gave her the info but I am afraid that it will affect my current position if I am not selected for the job. Anyone have experience with this? Other pertinent info is that I am currently off for a month because of a surgery and I don't have enough PTO and ESL to cover my entire absence so I am going to have to ask for a personal medical leave soon. I am praying that if I don't get the job that my NM will grant me personal medical leave and I don't end up jobless.

That's a tough one. If I were in the same boat, I think I'd tell my boss that I like where I work and those I work with, but want to move out of the area. That way it doesn't look like you're trying to get out of there for other reasons.

I actually am in a similar situation (minus the personal medical issues), knew my boss would be getting calls for a job reference, and let her know I was happy with the hospital, the department, and even the pay -- which is all true -- but I would like to move to another state where I lived before. So far that has not affected our working relationship. I am genuinely happy with her and my job, and I think the feeling is mutual.
