My intention is to live in either Vacaville (more likely) or Folsom (preferred). I like these cities for their proximity to UCDavis (a must, as my fiancee will be entering the vet med program there), and other tangible and intangible reasons. I am interested in the several Correctional nursing opportunitiesfor RN in that region. I am an "out of towner" (I did grow up in the area, a long time ago). I have the cdcr links.
A few questions if I may.
1. After posting the online open exam and whatnot, I am assuming there is a background/application process, then interview, provided of cours that you check out. Am I correct here, and what time frame are we looking at?
2. Is the interview able to be scheduled to accomodate the applicant's needs, in advance? (as in, getting time off/airline tickets/hotel/rental car)
3. Is the application/exam/interview "facility specific", or is it for all CDCR facilities?
4. My last question is which one? I am looking for the following factors in order of decending importance:
a. Well run facility/Good attitudes among coworkers
b. Commute time 90 minutes max (City of Folsom to SQ being an example of my "max" commute)
c. More money
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.
Just to let everyone know, I found a lot of the information regarding time frames when I began the application process. For example, you choose the individual facility, region, etc, as well as interview particulars, etc.
There were 2,000 applicants at my level on the exam (registered nurse), and about 200-300 above, and 500 or so below. I might take a stab in the dark (no pun intended on the corrections forum, of course) and guess that most are new grads, as I answered all of my questions "as a new grad", rather than with actual work experience.
You can also update your application as your experience and certifications (and RN license, as you may apply prior to receiving your RN license) status change, for example, you get a year of exp. in med surg, update the application. you get ACLS cert., update the application. You can begin doing this after 6 months of having your application in. --As well, if your contact info changes at all, you can immediately send an email to the application department to ammend your application. Your application is only valid for 12 months, then you may reapply.
Best of luck to everyone.
By the way, still looking for comments regarding experiences in any of the facilities I mentioned in Nor Cal.
I should also say, I have read a few articles about new health facilities being built in Folsom and SQ, se tot break ground in a while. Not sure what the current status of those places are, but it looks promising in terms of opportunities down the road.
Of course, this is now a problem for future employment opportunities, as CA prisions lost the fed receivership and all the $ that were attached to those projects.... Not to mention a recent massive prisoner release in the works...
