Ive not done this. All the pts Ive had that have CBI come back that way.

Did you have orders for this, and have you checked your protocols? If Im not familiar with a procedure and havent been trained to do it I check first.

Just the other day I had to refuse to do something that I know we dont do in our facility (nor any other that Ive worked in) even thought the Doc got hopping mad (funny). He told me "they do it on the other ICU".....ahemm, no they dont cuz I work there too-

Did you have an order?

Did your coworkers think you couldn't independently decide a pt needed a 3-way?

I don't know why inserting it would be out of your scope of practice, but CBI without an order probably would be.

I had an order, and I checked policy and procedure. My manager agreed I was in my scope of practice!

Sure..its like putting in any other type of foley..just a little more work involved after its in. For your patients sake, please make sure if you are putting in, you are getting it back out. I picked up a patient one morning from another nurse and she had left the irrigation on, but it wasn't draining properly.....patient in LOTS of pain.
