The purpose of accessing the artery and not the vein is to obtain access to the left side of the heart. The coronaries lie just above the aortic valve, so in order to see the heart arteries it has to be done via the aorta. If you were to go from the vein you would end up in the right atrium. The right side is usually accessed but not always due to the set up of most fluoroscopy machines. A doctor can access at any artery but it is easier from the right side.
