How much time are you talking about. Calling out a day or two shouldn't require you to pay anything back, esp if you are willing to work extra shifts to make up the time. If the hospital cancels your contract you shouldn't be required to pay back anything. Though I'm sure companies don't care about this, they kick you while your down just to get a nickel. Just keep showing up to work, and make sure you have let them know in writing that you intend to make up the missing time.
You will have a leg to stand on if they do intend to collect.

What does your contract say? There is usually something there about the hospital cancelling the contract and what happens. Mine does specify that if they cancel my contract for missed time that I would be responsible for housing costs.
