Can an RN be a freelance?

Published

Hello, I am an RN, BSN working on Home Health Care for eight years. I currently take class to get certified in Lymphedema and Wound Care. I like what I do, but I've been working all this time for agencies. I wonder if I can work independently, where I look for customers and billing to Medicare by myself. I do not know if this is possible. Someone can help me on this? I would appreciate any related information.

Thank you

RM

Hi,

This is a great question. In order to receive Medicare (federal funding/reimbursement) you will likely have to be licensed as an agency with your state. This is because Medicare has to regulate your practice in some way if they are paying you. The details of this, spends on the state you wish to practice in.

I hope this helped.

Thanks future, I have heard that a nurse can take NPI number and hence, provide own services, without the intermediation of an agency.

You're welcome Ram! You will need an NPI for identification purposes but there may be some other criteria you have to meet to be able to provide those services and get reimbursed by CMA (Medicare/Medicaid). Check out this link.

Also, can you share how you obtained this info? I'm interested because I have been researching how I can provide nursing services without forming an agency. This would be helpful!

Hi future, the information was given by a nurse from my family, who has many years of practice, she said I should talk to a consultant to clarify the procedure. Actually, I could not get "official" information on this subject. If you are interested, we could do a little research together.

May I give you may email address?
