I think it depends on where you go. The hospital I work at accepted 3 new grad RN's on labor & delivery, while another hospital a half hour away won't accept new grads in L&D. So, I don't know what they base it off of or how they decide to hire or not hire new grads in certain areas.

Yes you can work on a specialty unit after you get your RN license. Some hospitals do hire New Grads in their specialty unit and some do not. If you really want to work in a specialty unit I recommend finding a hospital that offers education and training in your specialty area of interest. When I was a new grad I went right into ICU, the hospital offered New Grads a 16 week course in Critical Care, that was very informative, educational, and tough. There were lectures, ppt presentations with printouts and tests, which I made a reference note book out of. I did well and am still working in ICU three years later. I know you can do it and with the right training it will be challenging, exciting and rewarding!
