BSN Vs ADN

Published

We are in alaska and I have been working on applying to the BSN program here. I am currently the first alternate but the class only takes 16 students, is filled and starts september 5. We could be moving in 2 years so there is no use in me applying next year and I need to start looking at other schools. I want my BSN but lots of programs are for the associates. I already have an Associates in social sciences and 119 college units total including all my nursing pre and co reqs. If I get my ADN will I have to retake many of those classes when doing an RN-BSN program or will it be shortened since I have all the general ed done? Also how is financial aide affected if I do an associates program and not a bachelors? I have been working on this 4 years now and my husband is military so its been a struggle with moving and different programs having different requirements. I am hoping someone drops last minute and I get in but not counting on it :(

If you get your ADN, you will not have to retake any of your classes. Financial aid depends on your income, but you will get it regardless if you get an associates degree or bachelors degree.

Nursing program classes do not transfer. If you might be moving, and know you can finish your ADN before you move, then get that one finished. You can then work as an RN. At any point after that you can do an RN-to-BSN program, many of which are online.

I would not consider starting a BSN if there was any chance that I could not finish it before moving. You would have to start over at the next place.

If you can get your ADN before your move date, go for it!

The BSN is up here and I can finish it if I get in for Fall 2017 which right now would be only if someone decides to give up their seat in the next couple weeks. The ADN would be where I may be moving. I dont mind doing an RN-BSN online but I just dont want my general ed ive already completed for the bsn program going to waste.
