BSN to PhD

Published

I am a second semester junior right now. Although I enjoy the clinical aspect of nursing, I realize I don't want to work by the bedside for my entire career. I also don't think I want to become an NP. I told this to my adviser. She recommended that I apply right into a PhD program. I don't have any experience as a nurse, so I was wondering how this would work. What are my chances of getting into a PhD program? And what type of career can I have besides research and teaching with a PhD? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

You might consider DNP; this would be the more flexible option, at least in my area of the country. This would allow you to teach if you chose, advance in administration if you prefer this, or even to see patients if you should later change your mind about advance practice.

Whatever you decide, I would consider shadowing people working in the roles you are considering. I would hate to see you commit to one path, only to realize it is not for you after a considerable investment in your education. Get to know the good and the bad sides of the options you are considering, if you haven't already.
