Hello everyone,

I was asked this question twice the past two weeks by TWO different people...LOL!...so im coming to the best information source as usual..Allnurses!!..lol...ok..so here it is...the two individuals asked me..."what can you do, or should i say, is there a difference in getting a BS vs. BSN AFTER you have your ADN?"...can you get into a masters program ex, MSN, FNP, ANP, etc etc...with a BS AND your ADN behind you?...or do you really need a BSN, for example if you ever want to get lets say your CRNA..will a BSN/BS make a difference?...i have a friend who is considering a BS vs the BSN..she has her ADN, and she wanted to know if you can still get positions that a BSN nurse would get with a BS...thanks..i hope i didnt confuse anyone!..lol...im curious to know if there are nurses out there with ADN who have BS in like designing, business, and yet can still get positions that BSN nurses can obtain...XoXo:typing

Few healthcare employers consider a BS in another field to be the equivalent of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Not all BS degrees in nursing are BSNs, however. There are nursing programs that issue BS degrees. For all practical purposes, a BS with a major in nursing is as well accepted as a BSN.

Now when you mention BS with a major in Nursing are you refering to the ADN?...XoXo

No.

An ADN is an Associate's Degree, often issued by a community or technical college.

A Bachelor's Degree (BS or BSN) is a degree which requires more college credit hours than an Associate's Degree, and is issued by a 4-year college or university. Bachelor's Degrees are issued in virtually every field (business, arts, sciences, education, engineering, etc.)

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a Bachelor's Degree that is specific to nursing. It is also possible to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in nursing (BS). These two degrees are essentially equivalent to each other, but very different from BS degrees in other fields.
